Introduction

A Schengen Visa (Type C) is issued for short temporary visits (such as leisure, business meetings, or family gatherings) to the Schengen Area. Regardless of your purpose of visit, it provides access to the following 29 Schengen countries without the need for separate visas for each nation:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

With a Schengen Visa (Type C), you can enter and stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. 

Types of Schengen Visa (Type C)

There are three types of Schengen type-C visas. These include: 

• Single-entry Schengen visa: Allows one entry into the Schengen Area. Once you exit, the visa becomes invalid. It is ideal for one-time trips.

• Double-entry Schengen visa: Permits two entries into the Schengen Area. This option is suitable for travellers who need to leave and re-enter the Schengen region. For example, if you exit Hungary (a Schengen country) to visit Serbia (a non-Schengen country), you can re-enter Hungary with the same double-entry visa. 

• Multiple-entry Schengen visa: Allows unlimited entries and exits within the visa’s validity, as long as you stay within the 90-day limit in a 180-day period. Best for frequent travellers.

Note: Regardless of the visa type, you can only stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days within a 180-day period. 

Application procedure for a Schengen Visa (Type C)

Here’s how to apply for a Schengen type-C visa from your country:

• Meet the eligibility criteria: Identify your visit's purpose (tourism or business) and prepare the necessary documents.

• Fill out the application form: Complete the form online or offline, then print and submit it to the visa centre.

• Schedule an appointment: Book a slot at the embassy or visa application centre to submit your documents and biometrics.

• Attend the appointment: Submit your application, pay the fee, and provide biometrics. An interview may be required in special cases.

• Receive the visa decision: Generally, you can expect a decision within 15 days. If approved, you get your visa; if denied, you’ll receive a refusal letter.

Documents required for a Schengen Visa (type C)

You will need the following documents to apply for a short-stay Schengen visa:

• Visa application form: A completed and signed Schengen visa application form.

• Photograph: A recent, passport-sized photo meeting the Schengen requirements.

• Passport: A passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen Area.

• Cover letter: A cover letter explaining your visit's purpose and travel plans.

• Proof of financial means: Recent bank statements and income tax returns to demonstrate you can financially support your stay.

• Proof of employment: An employment contract and a leave approval letter from your employer.

• Proof of return: Round-trip flight bookings.

• Proof of accommodation: Hotel reservation or an invitation letter from a host confirming your stay.

• Travel insurance: A comprehensive travel insurance meeting the Schengen visa requirements.
